The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed a viral video showing the arrest of some Fulani men allegedly found with arms and ammunition in Ikorodu, describing the footage as outdated and misleading.
The command said the video currently circulating across social media platforms is not a recent incident but an old clip linked to an operation that took place more than three years ago.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said portraying the old footage as a fresh security development in Lagos was capable of creating unnecessary fear and panic among residents.
According to the police, the video does not reflect the present security situation in Ikorodu or any other part of Lagos State.
“The recirculation of such outdated content as a recent occurrence is misleading, capable of creating unnecessary panic, fear and apprehension among residents,” the statement said.
The command urged members of the public to disregard the video and avoid sharing unverified information that could undermine public confidence and public peace.
It also warned social media users and content creators against spreading false, unverified and alarmist reports capable of causing disorder, noting that anyone found deliberately circulating misinformation or fake news would face investigation and possible prosecution under existing laws.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Tijani Fatai, has directed intensified deployment of police personnel and operational assets to black spots, strategic locations, and entry and exit points across the state.
The police said the proactive security measures are being implemented in collaboration with other security and safety agencies to strengthen protection for residents and visitors.
Residents were encouraged to continue their lawful activities without fear, with the command assuring that adequate measures had been put in place to safeguard lives and property.
The police also called for greater public cooperation, urging residents to remain vigilant and provide timely, credible and actionable intelligence on suspicious movements, persons or activities within their communities.
According to the command, information supplied by members of the public remains crucial to crime prevention and improved public safety across the state.
