Nearly weeks after her appointment by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Austria, Florence Ajimobi, has yet to officially assume duty in Vienna—raising questions in diplomatic and political circles.
Dr. Ajimobi, a former First Lady of Oyo State and widow of ex-governor Abiola Ajimobi, was named among Nigeria’s non-career ambassadorial nominees, a category of political appointees expected to represent the country with the same authority as career diplomats once confirmed and accredited.
Despite the expectations that typically follow such high-profile appointments, checks indicate that the envoy has not formally reported to her post as of May 10, 2026. While no official explanation has been issued, diplomatic sources suggest the delay may be tied to procedural requirements rather than any controversy.
In international diplomacy, ambassadors can not assume office without the approval—known as agrément—of the host country. Until Austria formally accepts her nomination, Dr. Ajimobi can not fully resume, regardless of her appointment status in Nigeria.
Even after approval, ambassadors must undergo credential presentation ceremonies before they are recognised in full capacity, a process that can take additional time depending on scheduling protocols in Vienna.
Insiders within the foreign affairs space also point to familiar bureaucratic and logistical bottlenecks that have historically slowed down Nigeria’s diplomatic deployments. From travel arrangements to official briefings and accommodation setup, these processes often stretch timelines beyond initial expectations.
There are also indications that the federal government may be coordinating a broader, phased deployment of envoys, a strategy that could see multiple ambassadors assume duty around the same period rather than individually.
While speculation continues to mount, there is no evidence suggesting that Dr. Ajimobi has declined the posting or is facing any diplomatic setback. Instead, her delayed resumption appears to reflect the often slow-moving machinery of international postings.
For now, attention remains on when the envoy will complete the final stages of deployment and begin her role as Nigeria’s chief diplomatic representative in Vienna.
