World Orthodontic Day: NAO Warns Against Quack Practitioners

The President of the Nigerian Association of Orthodontists (NAO), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, has urged Nigerians to seek only qualified dental professionals for orthodontic care, warning against the dangers of patronising quacks.
She made the call on Friday during the 2026 World Orthodontic Health Day, observed globally every May 15.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu said orthodontic specialists play a crucial role in improving oral health, correcting dental irregularities, and enhancing individuals’ confidence and appearance.
She stressed the importance of regular dental check-ups and warned that unqualified practitioners pose serious risks to patients seeking orthodontic treatment.
“The NAO president, who is also the chief medical director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), said World Orthodontic Health Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness on proper teeth alignment and oral hygiene.
She noted that the annual event, organised by the World Federation of Orthodontists, highlights the global importance of orthodontic care in improving quality of life.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu added that teaching hospitals, including UBTH, are marking the day with awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public on the benefits of professional orthodontic treatment.
