The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone D (North Central), has expressed concern over the reported arrest and detention of Kogi Reports editor, Mr. Opeyemi Owoeye, by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kogi State.
In a statement signed by the NUJ Zone D Vice President, Adeiza Momohjimoh, the union said the reported incident raises concerns about press freedom and the role of security agencies in a democratic society.The union urged the NSCDC to operate within its legal mandate and maintain professionalism, impartiality and respect for constitutional rights.
According to the statement, individuals who feel aggrieved by media reports should seek redress through established legal channels rather than resorting to actions that could be perceived as intimidation of journalists.
The NUJ also cautioned public officials and political actors against using state institutions in ways that may undermine public confidence in democratic processes and freedom of expression. “Democracy thrives on accountability, transparency and the free exchange of ideas,” the statement said.
The union called on the Commandant-General of the NSCDC to review the circumstances surrounding the reported detention and ensure that any actions taken by officers comply with the law and professional standards. Reaffirming its commitment to press freedom and the rule of law, the NUJ urged all stakeholders to protect the rights of journalists and uphold democratic values.
