Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has called on Nigerians to remain committed to protecting and strengthening the country’s democratic institutions as the nation marks Democracy Day.
In a message commemorating June 12, Ododo described the date as a symbol of sacrifice, patriotism, and the collective determination of Nigerians to uphold democratic governance.The governor urged citizens to reflect on the contributions of pro-democracy advocates and recommit themselves to the values that sustain the nation’s democracy.
According to him, Democracy Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the resilience of democratic institutions and honour individuals whose sacrifices helped secure the freedoms Nigerians enjoy today. “Despite the challenges confronting the nation, democracy remains the most credible platform for citizens to exercise their sovereign will, elect leaders, and hold governments accountable,” he said.
Ododo stressed the need for tolerance, dialogue, national unity, and responsible citizenship, urging Nigerians to reject actions that could undermine democratic institutions. He also paid tribute to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as a longstanding advocate of democratic governance whose political journey reflects resilience and commitment to democratic ideals.
The governor further honoured the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, widely regarded as a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, for his role in advancing democratic governance in the country. Ododo called on Nigerians to continue supporting efforts aimed at building a peaceful, secure, and prosperous nation anchored on democracy, good governance, and national unity.
