Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has approved the provision of Hadaya sacrificial rams for 1,725 indigent pilgrims from Borno State currently performing the 2026 Hajj in Saudi Arabia.
The Hadaya ritual, which involves the slaughter of a ram or other approved livestock, is a compulsory rite for pilgrims observing Hajj al-Tamattu and Hajj al-Qiran, the most common forms of Hajj undertaken by non-resident pilgrims.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s media aide, Abdulrahman Bundi, the sacrifice commemorates the obedience of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and forms part of the essential rites of Hajj.
The statement noted that beyond its spiritual significance, the meat from the sacrifices would be distributed to needy pilgrims and residents of the holy cities.
Each ram is expected to be slaughtered during the days of Tashreeq — from the 10th to the 12th of Dhul Hijjah — in accordance with Islamic guidelines.
In addition to funding the Hadaya, Governor Zulum also provided free Ihram garments for male pilgrims and khimar head coverings for female pilgrims from the state.
The governor further approved payment for hotel differentials to secure improved accommodation for the Borno contingent in Makkah.
The statement noted that this is not the first time the governor has funded Hadaya for Borno pilgrims, saying he has consistently approved similar support over several Hajj seasons to ensure that indigent pilgrims are able to complete their religious obligations.
Zulum also urged the pilgrims to intensify prayers for lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in Borno State and Nigeria as a whole.
