The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old man suspected of impersonating a police officer after allegedly stealing a uniform and other official items.
In a statement shared on its official X handle on Tuesday, the Command said the suspect reportedly stole a police officer’s bag containing a camouflage uniform, warrant card, mobile phone, ATM card and other personal belongings.
It added that he later put on the stolen camouflage uniform in an attempt to pass himself off as a serving officer.
According to the statement, residents became suspicious after noticing inconsistencies in his behaviour and mannerisms, which did not align with that of a genuine police officer.
The statement read, “The suspect subsequently wore the stolen camouflage uniform in an attempt to impersonate a police officer.
“However, vigilant passersby became suspicious after noticing that his behaviour and mannerisms were inconsistent with those of a genuine officer.
“The residents questioned him and discovered that he was an impostor and handed him to the Police for further investigation.”
The Command confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and that investigations are ongoing, adding that he will be charged to court upon conclusion of the probe.
It commended the residents for their alertness and civic responsibility, describing their action as evidence of the effectiveness of its “See Something, Say Something” campaign and the importance of public participation in security.
However, the police condemned all forms of jungle justice, stressing that no individual has the right to take the law into their own hands, regardless of the offence.
It urged members of the public to always hand over suspected offenders to the appropriate authorities for proper investigation and prosecution.
The Command also appreciated Lagos residents for their continued support, urging them to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities while allowing due process to take its course.
