Anambra Expresses Shock, Anger Over Attack On Governor’s Aid, Confirms That Four Persons Lost Their Lives In The Attack

The Anambra State government has expressed shock and dismay over the attack on the convoy of the chief of staff to the governor, Chief Ben Nwankwo, on Sunday night, May 31st, 2026, along Amansea -Awa-Ufuma road.

The attack occurred between 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm at the borders as Nwankwo was returning from an official assignment.

The government said it was more than an attack on one person, but an attack on the peace, security, and democratic order of our state, as well as the Government and people of Anambra.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner of Information and Value Reorientation, Dr. Law Mefor, the government confirmed that four people lost their lives in the attack.

The Government condoled the bereaved families, saying the police and other security agencies are working to find and to bring everyone involved in this evil act to justice.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has tasked all formations of the command to fish out perpetrators of the act within 48 hours.

He raised concerns over emerging criminal tactics, warning that intelligence reports indicated that some attackers now disguise themselves in police and military uniforms to carry out illicit operations.

He advised the general public to be vigilant concerning persons operating at various checkpoints, as some miscreants now wear security uniforms while carrying out criminal activities.

Orutugu further cautioned motorists and commuters using the Amansea–Ufuma Road, describing it as a vulnerable and isolated route that has increasingly become a hotspot for criminal ambushes.

He urged travellers to exercise heightened caution when moving through the axis, especially at night.

“The Amansea–Ufuma Road is a particularly isolated route. Commuters and members of the public should exercise caution while using the road, as it has, in recent times, become a den of criminal elements,” he said.

He, however, reassured residents that the Command remains fully committed and operationally prepared to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of lives and property across the state.
