Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, , has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alleging that the party’s recent primary elections were manipulated in favour of former Vice President .
Lawal announced his departure in a statement on Monday, claiming that the primaries were marred by widespread irregularities and that results were altered to favour Atiku and his supporters.
According to him, some candidates who emerged victorious during the exercise were allegedly replaced with individuals loyal to the former vice president.
The former SGF described the exercise as a violation of democratic principles and said he could not remain in a party where, in his view, the electoral process had been compromised.
Lawal also expressed concerns about Atiku’s suitability for the presidency, arguing that supporting the former vice president could weaken the opposition’s chances against President in the 2027 general election.
He further accused Atiku’s camp of promoting what he termed religious and ethnic interests, allegations that have yet to receive an official response from the former vice president or the ADC leadership.
The former SGF said he would temporarily withdraw from active politics to consult with associates on future political engagements ahead of the next election cycle.
His resignation comes at a time when opposition parties are intensifying efforts to build alliances and strengthen their positions ahead of the 2027 elections.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the ADC nor Atiku’s camp had issued an official statement responding to the allegations.
Political observers say the development may deepen divisions within the opposition and could trigger further realignments in the months leading to the 2027 polls.
