ABUJA – The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed deep concern over the worsening state of insecurity in the country, calling on governments at all levels to take urgent, decisive and sustained measures to safeguard lives and property.
In a message to Christians across the country to mark Black Sunday, observed on June 14, 2026, the President of CAN, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said the solemn occasion was dedicated to honouring the countless victims of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violence that have claimed lives and displaced communities across Nigeria.
According to the association, the observance is not only a period of mourning but also a call for collective action in addressing the nation’s growing security challenges.
“Today, we are not only mourning; we are speaking with one voice. Our nation is bleeding, and the Church cannot remain silent while innocent lives are lost and families live in fear,” the CAN president stated.
The association noted that the observance came shortly after the country’s Democracy Day celebration on June 12, stressing that the ideals of democracy are rooted in the sanctity of human life, justice, the rule of law and the protection of citizens.
CAN argued that ensuring the security of Nigerians remains fundamental to democratic consolidation and national development.
“There can be no more fitting way to honour the sacrifices that birthed our democracy than by recommitting ourselves to building a nation where every Nigerian can live, work, worship and travel in safety,” the statement said.
The Christian body expressed solidarity with bereaved families, displaced persons, victims of attacks and those traumatised by violence, while offering prayers for healing, comfort and justice.
It also commended the House of Representatives for passing the Community and State Policing Bill on June 11, describing the initiative as a significant step towards strengthening grassroots security architecture and enhancing community participation in protecting lives and property.
While awaiting the conclusion of legislative processes in the Senate, CAN urged policymakers to prioritise measures capable of improving security across the country.
The association further called on churches, Christian schools, hospitals, mission institutions and other faith-based organisations to adopt proactive security measures to protect worshippers, students, staff and facilities.
According to CAN, increased vigilance, security awareness, emergency preparedness and collaboration with local security structures have become necessary in view of prevailing threats.
The Christian body also encouraged Nigerians to remain united, continue supporting affected communities and resist the temptation to succumb to fear despite the current challenges.
It prayed for divine wisdom and courage for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other leaders entrusted with the responsibility of securing the nation.
“May God comfort the bereaved, heal the wounded, protect our nation, and grant our leaders the wisdom, courage and determination to confront and overcome this menace,” the statement added.
CAN reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, justice and national healing, urging citizens to continue praying and working towards a safer and more secure Nigeria.
