After South Africa failed to deal with a cross, Eustáquio expertly controlled the loose ball on his chest before firing a powerful volley into the bottom corner, sparking wild celebrations among the Canadian players and supporters.
The victory sends co-hosts Canada into the last 16, where they will face either the Netherlands or Morocco. While the result keeps their World Cup dream alive, Jesse Marsch’s side will know they must raise their performance levels against stronger opposition.
Speaking after the match, Eustáquio praised his teammates’ determination.
“We kept believing and kept pushing. When I hit the ball, it felt like every Canadian hit it with me. It was an amazing feeling.”
He also acknowledged the challenge ahead but insisted Canada have every reason to dream.
“We’re going to face Morocco or the Netherlands, and on a good day, anything can happen. Belief will be very important.”
It was far from a classic World Cup encounter, but one moment of brilliance from Canada’s captain proved enough to end South Africa’s campaign and send the tournament co-hosts into the knockout stage.
