Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced yesterday evening that a peace agreement had been reached between the United States and Iran following intensive negotiations, saying both sides had agreed to an immediate and permanent halt to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon.
Sharif said mediators would begin facilitating a series of meetings later this week as the agreement takes effect. The formal signing ceremony is scheduled to take place in Switzerland on 19 June.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, said Tehran had approved the memorandum of understanding after its final demands were incorporated into the text. He added that Iran’s military strength and the threats issued by the country had helped bring the agreement to completion.
He said the memorandum did not signify trust in the United States, stressing that Iran would take its own measures if it detected any violations by the other side.
The Iranian official added that further negotiations would be held over a 60-day period to reach a final agreement, noting that the text of the memorandum of understanding would be published after its formal signing.
