Controversy Trails Alleged Detention Of Teachers Following PDP Campaign Visit In Nsukka

Some staff members of the University of Nigeria Secondary School, Nsukka, were reportedly questioned by security personnel of the University following a political gathering said to have involved members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

The incident allegedly occurred on the evening of June 15, 2026, shortly after PDP campaign officials concluded an engagement ahead of the June 20 Enugu North Senatorial District by-election.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the PDP candidate in the election, Dr. Nestor Ezeme, was accompanied by Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji during the visit.

Sources claimed that the university management was opposed to political activities being conducted within the university community.

Witnesses alleged that university security personnel arrived at the venue shortly after the campaign team had departed and sought to identify those who facilitated the gathering. One of the staff members, Mr. Lawrence Oko, popularly known as “Uncle Law” and said to be a Civic Education teacher at the school, was reportedly taken in for questioning by security operatives.

Sources further alleged that Mr. Oko was asked to make a written statement while with the security personnel, although the content of any such statement could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report.

Some staff members questioned the circumstances surrounding the reported invitation, noting that politicians and public office seekers have, on previous occasions, interacted with members of the university community without similar incidents being publicly reported.

There were also claims from some sources that a security official allegedly referred to Chief Uche Nnaji as “an enemy of the university.” However, this claim could not be independently verified.

Meanwhile, another staff member, Hon. Chinedu Ezenwa, was reportedly invited to appear before the university’s security department on June 16 to provide information regarding the circumstances surrounding the invitation extended to Dr. Ezeme and members of his campaign team.

Sources familiar with the matter maintained that the gathering took place outside the premises of the University of Nigeria Secondary School and that approval had been obtained from relevant school authorities before it was held. This claim could not be independently confirmed.

There were also allegations from sources that security personnel were deployed to monitor the movements of the visiting politicians. However, details surrounding the purpose of such monitoring remain unclear, and these claims have not been independently verified.

Some sources further claimed that the matter attracted the attention of police personnel in Nsukka, although no official confirmation was immediately available from the Nigeria Police Force regarding the nature or extent of any involvement.

Members of the university community who spoke on the matter called for a review of the actions taken by security personnel and urged the authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding the reported questioning of staff members.
