The Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP) has expressed strong support for a recent call by the House of Representatives Minority Caucus urging President Bola Tinubu to either demonstrate more effective leadership in addressing Nigeria’s mounting challenges or consider resigning from office.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its Acting National Chairman, Chief Peter Ameh, the opposition coalition said it was fully aligned with the position taken by the Minority Caucus, arguing that public office holders must be held accountable for their performance and ability to improve the lives of citizens.
According to the CUPP, the current administration must urgently confront the growing concerns of Nigerians, particularly in the areas of insecurity, economic hardship and social welfare.
The group maintained that leadership is a responsibility that requires measurable results and tangible improvements in the wellbeing of the population.
“In a sane clime, any elected official who refuses to produce results of good governance that will help make the lives of the people better should honourably resign,” the statement read.
The coalition further stated that President Tinubu and his administration must take immediate steps to address the country’s pressing challenges, warning that continued hardship among citizens could further erode public confidence in government institutions.
“President Bola Tinubu and his administration must step up immediately to address the pressing issues of insecurity, economic hardship, and the general wellbeing of Nigerians. Leadership is not a right but a responsibility. Where this responsibility is not being discharged effectively, the honourable path is resignation,” the statement added.
The CUPP also called on the President to respond decisively to the concerns being raised by citizens across the country, noting that many Nigerians continue to struggle with rising living costs, unemployment, insecurity and other socio-economic difficulties.
“We urge the President to heed this call and take immediate, visible steps to alleviate the suffering of citizens across the country,” the group said.
The statement comes amid growing political debate over the performance of the federal government and the impact of recent economic reforms. Opposition parties and civil society organisations have increasingly voiced concerns about the state of the economy, while the government has maintained that its policies are necessary to stabilise the country and lay the foundation for long-term growth.
CUPP stated that it would continue to monitor developments within the country and remain vocal on issues affecting the welfare of Nigerians. The coalition stressed that its position was driven by the need to ensure accountability and good governance, regardless of political affiliations.
The latest remarks are likely to intensify discussions surrounding the administration’s performance as political stakeholders continue to assess the government’s response to the economic and security challenges facing the nation.
