The Campaign Civil Society Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Osun State, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), has called on all political actors, government institutions, and electoral bodies to uphold democratic principles by ensuring that elections truly reflect the genuine will of the people.
Addressing newsmen at a press conference held NUJ Correspondents’ in Osogbo on Wednesday, the Secretary of the group, Comrade Adeola Olayiwola, urged them to uphold the principles that made the June 12 election a landmark event.
According to him, Let us work together to build a Nigeria where elections reflect the genuine will of the people, where public trust in democratic processes continues to grow, and where leadership is driven by service, integrity, and national interest.
“We call upon all political actors, government institutions, electoral bodies, and citizens to uphold the principles that made the June 12 election a landmark event”. he said.
Speaking on the outline of the event to mark this year democracy day in Osun State, Olayiwola said that they have organized a commemorative programme themed “Democracy and The Ideals of Progressive Governance.”
He said that the event is designed to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and assess progress since the return to civilian rule.
He noted that democracy must go beyond periodic elections, stressing that it should translate into accountability, inclusiveness, economic development and improved welfare for citizens.
“June 12 occupies a special place in the history of our nation. It represents the triumph of the democratic spirit of the Nigerian people and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless patriots in the struggle for democratic governance, justice, and national unity.
“As part of our commitment to preserving the memory and lessons of June 12, we have organized a commemorative programme themed “Democracy and The Ideals of Progressive Governance.
“The programme is designed to provide a platform for reflection on Nigeria’s democratic journey, assess the progress made since the return to democratic rule, and explore ways of strengthening democratic institutions and promoting good governance at all levels.
As we mark this anniversary, we are reminded that democracy is not merely about elections. It is about accountability, justice, transparency, respect for the rule of law, and the protection of citizens’ rights. The lessons of June 12 challenge us to continue strengthening our democratic institutions and ensuring that every vote counts,” he said.
