Democracy Day: Federal Polytechnic Ile-Oluji Rector Urges Nigerians To Reject Corruption, Political Division

As Nigerians commemorated this year’s Democracy Day, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Dr. Ademola Iyanda Ebeloku, has called on citizens to shun apathy, corruption and divisive politics, stressing that democracy can only thrive when people actively participate in nation-building.
In his Democracy Day message, Dr. Ebeloku described June 12 as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that the date symbolises the courage, sacrifice and determination of Nigerians who fought to ensure that the people’s mandate is respected.
According to him, democracy goes beyond periodic elections and requires informed, responsible and active citizens who are committed to the development of their communities and the nation at large.
The Rector said institutions of higher learning have a critical role to play in sustaining democratic ideals, adding that Federal Polytechnic, Ile-Oluji, is committed not only to producing skilled professionals but also raising future leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs and problem-solvers.
Addressing students of the institution, Dr. Ebeloku urged them to focus on acquiring relevant skills and upholding integrity, saying these qualities are essential for building a stronger democracy.
“Your power lies not only in the ballot you will cast tomorrow, but in the skills you acquire today, the integrity you uphold, and the ideas you contribute to societal development,” he stated.
He challenged young Nigerians to reject violence, misinformation and intolerance, while embracing critical thinking and solution-driven approaches to the country’s challenges.
The Rector also commended members of staff of the Polytechnic for their dedication to academic excellence and character moulding, describing their contributions as vital to the development of responsible and patriotic citizens.
Dr. Ebeloku reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to democratic principles, including respect for due process, transparency, adherence to regulations and the promotion of freedom of expression within the limits of the law.
He noted that the Polytechnic would continue to collaborate with government agencies, industry stakeholders and host communities to advance sustainable development through research, innovation and the training of skilled manpower.
The Rector further reminded Nigerians that democracy remains a continuous process that requires patience, vigilance, participation and patriotism from all citizens.
He therefore called on Nigerians to embrace dialogue, accountability, national unity and selfless service, stressing that the country’s progress depends largely on the collective actions of its people.
Dr. Ebeloku charged students to be disciplined, innovative and law-abiding, urging them to become a generation that will strengthen democratic institutions and contribute meaningfully to national development.
“As we mark this year’s Democracy Day, may we recommit ourselves to the enduring ideals of justice, unity, peace and progress. May the sacrifices of the past inspire our actions today and strengthen our hope for a brighter tomorrow,” he said.
He wished Nigerians a happy Democracy Day and prayed for continued peace and prosperity for Ondo State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
