Cuba’s National Power Grid Collapses

The state-run grid operator, Unión Eléctrica (UNE), said the outage occurred around midday after the national power system became completely disconnected.

Authorities said investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing.

The blackout occurred while much of the country was already experiencing electricity shortages, with widespread outages reported across several provinces.

Cuba has faced repeated nationwide blackouts in recent months amid a prolonged energy crisis linked to ageing power infrastructure and fuel shortages.

The government has also blamed external factors, including United States sanctions, for worsening fuel supply challenges.

The latest outage disrupted electricity, water supply and other essential services in Havana and other parts of the country. Officials have yet to say when full power will be restored.

Authorities said efforts to restore electricity are ongoing, with further updates expected.
