The Obidient Movement has moved to reassure its supporters that recent legal developments involving the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) will not disrupt the political coalition backing Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Monday, the National Coordinator of the movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, maintained that the alliance remained united despite the legal uncertainty surrounding the proposed political platform.
His remarks followed Friday’s ruling by the Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja, where Justice Isah Dashen nullified an earlier judgment delivered on December 10, 2025, directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress as a political party.
The court held that the earlier decision had implications for the rights of the Peace Movement Party, which claimed ownership of the logo used in securing the registration order but was not joined as a party in the suit.
Reacting to concerns generated by the judgment, Tanko said supporters should remain confident, insisting that the coalition’s political objective remained unchanged.
He said, “We want to reassure our supporters that the coalition is intact and growing stronger. Mr Peter Obi and Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso will be on the ballot in 2027. No amount of intimidation or legal manoeuvring can stop the will of the people.”
According to him, the movement remains committed to pursuing its political aspirations through constitutional and democratic means despite the legal and political challenges confronting the coalition.
Tanko stated that the alliance was focused on presenting what it described as a credible alternative to the current administration, adding that its engagement would continue to be peaceful and inclusive.
“We are building a broad-based movement that reflects the aspirations of ordinary Nigerians. Our focus is to rescue the country through democratic engagement, not violence or division,” he said.
He appealed to members and supporters across the country to remain peaceful, united and committed to the democratic process, assuring them that the movement would continue to protect the interests of its leaders and members within the framework of the law.
Tanko also urged public institutions and political stakeholders to uphold democratic principles by ensuring that electoral and judicial processes remain independent and credible.
“We are asking all institutions to do the right thing. Democracy thrives when the people are allowed to choose their leaders without interference,” he added.
The Obidient Movement further disclosed that consultations across various political interests would continue as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, assuring supporters that they would be kept informed of future developments regarding the coalition.
Also speaking at the briefing, NDC House of Representatives aspirant for the Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency of Cross River State, Peter Akah, popularly known as Randy Peter, expressed confidence that the coalition’s presidential ticket would eventually participate in the 2027 elections.
Akah also expressed the view that the legal issues surrounding the NDC were aimed at frustrating the party’s presidential ambition.
He said, “We as Nigerians must have the understanding that what the NDC is going through is not only their problem. They must understand that in 2027, the battle is between a corrupt political class and more than 200 million victims of failed and rudderless leadership.
“If Mr Peter Obi does not become president tomorrow, I’m not sure he has a lot to lose in his personal life. But many of us here seated as young people have a lot to lose if Nigeria does not work. So, as a people, we must know that this is a battle against our own lives. Let the sense of reasoning guide every person.
“Obi was in the Labour Party, problem came. He left Labour, and the party became peaceful. Obi entered the ADC, another problem. Obi left the ADC; the problem left.
“He joined the NDC, and the same problem resurfaced. Nobody or political party that controls everybody, including over 30 governors, should be this afraid. Go and get your PVC because our leader, Peter Obi, and Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso will be on the ballot.”
