The Department of State Services (DSS) has announced an investigation into the conduct of its operatives following the remand of presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the DSS Deputy Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Favour Dozie, the agency said it was aware of public concerns surrounding events at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday that led to Sowore’s remand.
The Service noted that concerns had been raised over an altercation involving a custodial officer and a reported scuffle between Sowore and security operatives.
According to the DSS, although Sowore was eventually conveyed to the Kuje Correctional Centre, he reportedly chose to travel in a DSS vehicle rather than one belonging to the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The agency described the development as unusual and said it formed part of the issues being reviewed.
The DSS disclosed that its Director-General had ordered an immediate investigation into the conduct of all operatives involved in the incident.
Providing background to the case, the Service said Sowore was charged over a social media post allegedly made on August 25, 2025, in which he criticised President Bola Tinubu regarding comments made during a foreign trip.
The DSS stated that instead of arresting him immediately, it issued a letter on September 4, 2025, requesting a retraction within one week as part of efforts to resolve the matter without resorting to force.
The agency also referenced previous cases in which it sought apologies or judicial clarification over alleged false publications involving its personnel, including matters that were decided in favour of DSS officers by the courts.
According to the Service, Sowore was charged under Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024.
It added that he was granted bail on self-recognition and that the DSS neither opposed the bail application nor carried out his arrest.
The Service maintained that all actions taken in the matter were based on court processes and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and adherence to the rule of law.
