Equatorial Guinea’s government has resigned after failing to meet its stated objectives, Vice-President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue has said.
Obiang, who is also the son of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, said the prime minister submitted the resignation of all cabinet members after the administration reportedly achieved only about 10 per cent of its targets.
Although the exact objectives were not disclosed, a statement from the ruling party said the president was dissatisfied with the government’s performance, accusing it of encouraging corruption and failing to diversify the economy.
President Obiang has ruled the oil-rich Central African nation since 1979, making him one of the world’s longest-serving leaders, and has consistently appointed close family members to key positions of power.
The outgoing government was appointed in 2024, with Manuel Osa Nsue Nsua serving as prime minister.
The vice-president said the resignation reflected the principle that public office must be tied to measurable results, adding that performance levels were “clearly insufficient” compared to expectations.
The ruling Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea (PDGE) further alleged misuse of state resources and poor implementation of development projects, particularly in efforts to diversify the economy beyond oil.
Despite its petroleum wealth, Equatorial Guinea’s economy remains heavily dependent on oil and gas exports, while much of its estimated 1.8 million population continues to face widespread poverty amid declining production and weaker global demand in recent years.
A new government is expected to be appointed in the coming days.
