Acting Public Affairs Officer of the US Embassy, Amanda Roach Brown has commended all participants at the just concluded Freedom 250 football tournament held on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at the Upbeat Recreation Center, Victoria Island, Lekki, Lagos.
In her remarks at the end of the tournament Roach Brown expressed appreciation to all the participants.
She said: “I want to commend all those that made the event a huge success. From the referees to the players and their officials as well as the fans that turned up to cheer the players, it was a great day.
“We decided to do this in collaboration with the Lagos State government and in the spirit of the ongoing FIFA World Cup which the US is one of the hosts”, she said.
Recall that the Public Diplomacy Section of the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos organised the Freedom Cup, a football tournament marking Freedom 250—the yearlong commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and America’s enduring legacy of freedom and unity.
At the end of the novelty tournament, Team Truth (comprising Sports Journalists) defeated Team Opportunity (made up of the Education USA section) 6 – 2 to win the first place position.
Team Liberty defeated Team Legacy 4 – 1 to win the third place match.

The tournament brought together U.S. government exchange alumni, students, journalists, representatives of the Lagos State Government, and members of the U.S. Mission community.
The U.S. Consul General Rick Swart presented medals and trophies to the first and second placed teams.
Swart commended American excellence in sports and the growing commercial and cultural ties between the United States and Nigeria.
