Group Faults Atiku’s Call For Gbajabiamila’s Suspension, Urges Equal Scrutiny Of Public Figures

ABUJA – The Arewa Youth Integrity Forum (AYIF) has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s call for the suspension of the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, over allegations of bribery, arguing that all allegations against public officials should be investigated without prejudice.

In a statement signed by its National President, Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu, the group described Atiku’s demand for Gbajabiamila’s suspension as politically motivated, maintaining that the former Vice President lacked the moral authority to make such a call in light of past allegations that have been made against him.

The forum’s reaction followed a statement by Atiku’s media team calling for Gbajabiamila’s suspension and an independent investigation into allegations that the Chief of Staff demanded a ₦400 million bribe.

AYIF said it supports a transparent investigation into any allegation of wrongdoing but insisted that due process should be allowed to take its course.

According to the group, allegations against serving public officials should not be used as political tools, particularly where they remain unproven.

The forum argued that Atiku himself has, over the years, faced various allegations and controversies relating to his time in public office, noting that while many of the claims have been widely reported, they have also been disputed by the former Vice President.

AYIF maintained that anyone calling for accountability should also be willing to subject their own public record to scrutiny.

The group further described Gbajabiamila as a public servant whose career in the legislature and the executive has, in its view, been characterised by service and commitment to governance.

It urged Nigerians to allow investigative authorities to independently examine the allegations against the Chief of Staff rather than reach conclusions based on political statements.

AYIF also cautioned political actors against making statements capable of prejudicing ongoing or potential investigations, stressing that allegations of corruption should be resolved through lawful processes and supported by credible evidence.

The forum reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability in public office, adding that the same standards should apply to all political leaders regardless of party affiliation or status.

It called on public office holders and opposition figures alike to promote issue-based political engagement and avoid actions capable of undermining public confidence in democratic institutions.
