Catholic Relief Services works with Caritas Venezuela
MIAMI — Catholic Relief Services, a Maryland-based nonprofit founded in 1943, is responding to the 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes that struck on Wednesday.
The nonprofit is working with the support of the U.S. State Department and through a long-term partnership with Caritas Venezuela, a nonprofit founded in 1997, to respond to La Guaira.
The team’s list of goals includes providing food assistance to children under 5 and pregnant and nursing women; prioritizing water, sanitation, and “hygiene support;” and distributing “voucher‑based” cash aid to families in need.
A spokesperson for Caritas released a statement in Spanish with the organization’s wish: “May peace and consolation from merciful love reach every Venezuelan family.”
Caracas Archbishop Raúl Biord Castillo also released a statement in Spanish.
“It is time to reach out to our neighbors, to take special care of our elderly, young people, and children, and to demonstrate that faith translates into fraternal love,” Castillo wrote. He also called for Venezuelans to “set aside differences and unite as one people.”
