In the life of any democratic administration, citizens expect high-quality, durable, and impactful projects that can stand the test of time, mostly being referred to as “Land mark projects.””
Let’s take Comrade Governor Nasir Idris’sadministration, as a case study, in view of his exhibited God’s divine foresight in the last three years which showed a clear combination of capital-intensive infrastructure and direct-impact socio-economic programmes.
Both, by every standard, qualify as landmark legacies.
According to Abdulllahi Idris Zuru as part of a delibarate policy contained in his developmental blueprint that provided for execution of new valuable infrastructure,l and viable socio-economic programmes as well as completion of inherited abandoned infrastructures and rehabilitation of the dilapidated and decayed structures, abandoned for over a decade.
Such projects include the ultra modern secretariat complex initiated by a previous administration and stalled for over ten years, but now completed, equipped, and opened for government business by Comrade Governor Nasir Idris’s administration.
He noted that among the brand new, valuable, and capital-intensive projects executed included the Ultra Modern Motor Park, Birnin Kebbi, Kauran Gwandu College of Midwifery Sciences, Ambursa and a Veterinary Specialists Hospital, soon to be fully equipped with modern facilities and specialists.
The facility, which is of international standards, is to serve livestock producers, herders, and investors from Kebbi and neighbouring states.
It is also expected to provide necessary services that can promote large scale production of healthy livestock that can eventually lead to establishment of milk and beef processing factories in the state, thereby increasing the state’s sources of Internally Generated Revenue.
The administration took over the 87km Koko-Zuru abandoned federal road linking Zuru, Fakai, Sakaba, and Danko/Wasagu LGAs. Abandoned for 10 years.
The deplorable condition of the road had not only cut off Zuru Emirate from the state capital and neighbouring communities but also subjected the people to years of untold hardship and destroyed their economic fortunes.
The reconstruction by the state government has now reached 70% completion, reopening trade routes and restoring livelihoods.
Under the Comrade Governor’s human Capital and welfare programmes, durable programmes with direct impact on lives can also be noted as landmarks.
The education sector was given the required attention with the establishment of Special Mega secondary schools one each in Birnin kebbi, Argungu, Yauri and Zuru.
The schools are expected to deliver quality education and skills acquisition for youth self-reliance.
The instituted policy of Farming Inputs Policy, first of its kind in Kebbi. has, for the last three years made farmers receive free fertilizer, certified seeds, solar-powered irrigation pumps, power tillers, insecticides, and herbicides at no cost.
The health sector has also been transformed with complete overhauled, provision of modern health care equipments, required manpower and establishment of four referal specialist hospitals in Birnin Kebbi, Argungu, Yauri and Zuru.
Whether physical or programmatic, the projects and policies executed by Comrade Governor Nasir Idris within three years represent landmark and everlasting legacies.
They combine infrastructure durability with direct, sustained impact on the lives of Kebbi people.
Reviving abandoned projects, completing critical roads, and instituting people-centered programmes all require political will. That is the definition of exemplary leadership.
