A tragic bus crash in Uganda claimed the lives of 21 people, 20 pupils from King David Junior School in Ndejje and one adult, when the vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a tea estate along the highway.
The bus was traveling from Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa District. Preliminary police investigations indicate the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road, hit a large roadside rock, and overturn.
Frequent, devastating accidents involving buses and trucks highlight the severe road safety crisis and crumbling highway infrastructure in the East African country.
According to a police statement on X, the driver lost control of the vehicle, veered off the roadway, crashed into a large boulder on the side, and rolled over.
It added, “The crash claimed the lives of one adult male and 20 pupils, while three adult males and several juveniles sustained injuries.”
Authorities released a photo of the severely damaged, overturned bus. They stated that the investigation is active, while several children and adults continue to receive hospital treatment.
Fatal bus accidents are relatively common in Uganda. In October, two buses collided on a major highway, killing at least 46 people.
A 2024 crime and traffic report documented 4,434 fatal collisions and 5,144 deaths that year. These specific figures were highlighted by Agence France-Presse (AFP) and cited by various news outlets reporting on nationwide safety statistics.
