How Many Students Now Depend On AI

In classrooms, lecture halls, libraries, and dormitories across the world, AI has become the new study partner for millions of students worldwide. Increasingly, students are turning to Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and other generative AI platforms to assist with their academic work. What began as a technological curiosity has rapidly evolved into a daily necessity for many learners, raising questions about whether students are merely using AI or becoming dependent on it.

Recent studies suggest that AI adoption among students has grown at an unprecedented rate. A 2025 survey conducted by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) and Kortext found that 92 percent of university students now use AI in some form, compared to 66 percent in 2024. The report also revealed that 88 percent of students had used generative AI tools for assessments, a significant increase from 53 percent the previous year.

The findings indicate that AI has become deeply integrated into the educational experience. From explaining difficult concepts and summarizing lengthy articles to generating research ideas and editing assignments, students increasingly rely on AI to navigate academic challenges. For many, AI has become as essential as search engines and online libraries once were.

The rise of AI among students reflects a major transformation in education. Unlike previous generations that relied on textbooks, encyclopedias, and traditional internet searches, today’s students have access to conversational AI systems capable of providing instant responses, personalized explanations, and study assistance around the clock.

Research showed that many students use these tools for brainstorming ideas, revising essays, conducting research, and understanding difficult subjects.

Globally, the trend is equally significant. According to Chegg’s Global Student Survey 2025, four out of every five undergraduate students worldwide, approximately 80 percent, have used generative AI to support their studies. The survey, which covered students across 15 countries, found that nearly one-third of students now turn to AI before consulting textbooks, online resources, or even classmates when they encounter academic difficulties.

Educational experts say the speed of adoption is unlike anything previously witnessed in academic technology. While it took years for laptops and smartphones to become standard learning tools, generative AI has achieved widespread student adoption in less than three years since the public release of ChatGPT in late 2022.

WHY STUDENTS ARE TURNING TO AI

The reasons behind AI’s growing popularity among students include increasing academic workloads, tight deadlines, and rising competition. AI tools provide immediate assistance, available 24 hours a day, without appointments or waiting times.

Many students report using AI to:

* Explain difficult concepts in simpler language.

* ‘ Summarize textbooks and academic articles.

* ‘ Generate ideas for assignments and projects.

* ‘ Improve grammar and writing quality.

* ‘ Assist with coding and technical tasks.

* ‘ Create study guides and revision notes.

‘ Conduct preliminary research.

The HEPI survey found that saving time and improving work quality were among the primary reasons students use AI. Many students view the technology as a productivity tool rather than a shortcut.

For international students and non-native English speakers, AI has proven especially useful.

Studies suggest that these groups often use AI to improve writing clarity, understand complex academic language, and bridge communication gaps.

THE GROWING DEPENDENCY QUESTION

While AI’s educational benefits are widely acknowledged, educators are increasingly concerned about dependency.

A growing number of students now consult AI before conducting independent research or attempting to solve problems themselves. Some educators fear that excessive reliance could weaken critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and creativity.

Evidence of this dependence can already be seen in student behavior. Surveys show that many learners use AI not only for academic support but as their primary source of information and guidance. In some cases, students admit to incorporating AI-generated content directly into assignments.

The HEPI report found that 18 percent of students had included AI-generated text directly in their coursework. Although institutions have implemented policies governing AI use, enforcement remains a challenge.

Critics argue that overreliance on AI could create a generation of students who are skilled at prompting machines but less capable of independent analysis. Supporters, however, counter that AI is simply the latest educational tool, comparable to calculators, spell-checkers, and internet search engines.

 

UNIVERSITIES ADJUST TO A NEW REALITY

Educational institutions around the world are now racing to adapt.

Universities are redesigning assessments, introducing AI literacy programs, and developing guidelines to help students use AI responsibly. The challenge is not simply preventing misuse but teaching students how to leverage AI effectively while maintaining academic integrity.

According to recent surveys, around 80 percent of students say their institutions now have policies regarding AI use. However, many students report receiving little formal training on how to use the technology responsibly.

Educators increasingly emphasize that AI should function as a learning assistant rather than a replacement for learning itself.

Although comprehensive national statistics for Nigeria remain limited, AI adoption among Nigerian students mirrors global trends. University students across the country increasingly use ChatGPT and similar platforms for assignments, research assistance, coding, and exam preparation.

The rapid expansion of smartphone access and internet connectivity has made AI tools readily available to millions of young Nigerians.

Students often cite affordability and convenience as major advantages, especially in environments where access to academic resources may be limited.

Experts believe AI could help bridge educational gaps in developing countries by providing personalized learning support to students who may lack access to tutors and extensive learning materials.

However, concerns about misinformation, plagiarism, and digital inequality remain significant challenges.

 

THE FUTURE OF LEARNING

The debate over AI in education is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.

What is clear is that AI has moved beyond being a novelty. For millions of students worldwide, it has become an integral part of the learning process. Surveys consistently show that between 80 and 90 percent of university students now use AI in some capacity, while more than four out of five high school students have experimented with AI-assisted learning.

As Artificial Intelligence continues to increase, the challenge facing educators, parents, and policymakers is ensuring that AI enhances learning rather than replaces it.
