IPOB Knocks Soludo Over Rejection Of Obi’s Call For Kanu’s Release

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has criticised Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo, over his opposition to National Democratic presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for advocating the release of the group’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB accused Soludo of adopting a position that contradicts his previous public remarks on Kanu’s continued detention.

The group recalled that the governor had in the past openly supported Kanu’s release and reportedly visited him at a Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja in January 2023, where he offered to stand surety for the detained separatist leader.

IPOB also cited comments attributed to the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, in March 2025, indicating that Soludo had continued to pursue Kanu’s release as part of efforts to restore peace and stability in the South-East.

The organisation expressed concern that the same administration was now allegedly criticising Peter Obi for making a similar appeal, describing the development as inconsistent.

Questioning what it called a shift in the governor’s position, IPOB suggested that political considerations may have influenced his stance on the issue.

The group maintained that calls for Kanu’s release are not limited to any political party or region, noting that several notable Nigerians, including the late Mbazulike Amaechi and former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, George Obiozor, had previously advocated dialogue and a political solution to the matter.

IPOB reiterated that Kanu’s continued detention remains a source of concern to its members and supporters, urging the Federal Government to consider his release.

The group further pledged continued support for individuals and organisations advocating Kanu’s freedom, stressing that it would pursue the cause through peaceful and lawful means.
