IGP Charges Officers On Professionalism, Integrity As Enugu Gets DNA Forensic Centre

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun’s representative, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to strengthening intelligence-led, technology-driven and evidence-based policing as part of ongoing efforts to improve public safety and criminal justice administration across the country.
The Inspector-General made the commitment during a working visit to Enugu State, where he participated in the commissioning of the Centre for DNA Forensics, Criminal Investigation and Biotechnology (DeFOCI), a landmark institution expected to significantly enhance Nigeria’s forensic and investigative capabilities.
The police boss, according to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, CSP Anietie Okokon Iniedu, on Sunday, described the facility as a strategic national asset, the IGP said the establishment of the Centre marks another important milestone in the country’s quest to modernise policing through the deployment of scientific tools and cutting-edge forensic technology.
According to him, the Centre will not only strengthen criminal investigations but also improve the quality of evidence available for prosecution, enhance the administration of justice and deepen the adoption of globally accepted scientific methods in contemporary policing.
The Inspector-General commended the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, Godfrey Okoye University, the DNA Learning Center, and other partners whose collaboration culminated in the successful establishment of the Centre.
He noted that the institution would serve as a critical platform for forensic research, professional training, institutional collaboration and capacity development for security agencies, researchers and criminal justice practitioners.
The IGP further explained that the Centre’s advanced forensic capabilities would support investigations into a wide range of serious criminal offences, including homicide, kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery, cybercrime, human trafficking and sexual offences, thereby strengthening the country’s overall crime detection and prosecution framework.
He observed that the increasing complexity of criminal activities demands corresponding investments in science, innovation and technology, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to embracing modern policing methods capable of effectively responding to evolving security threats.
During an interaction with officers and personnel of the Enugu State Police Command, the Inspector-General commended their dedication, resilience and sacrifices in maintaining law and order across the state despite prevailing security challenges.
He urged officers to remain vigilant and proactive in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities by strengthening intelligence gathering, improving community engagement and embracing continuous professional development.
The IGP also charged personnel to uphold the highest standards of discipline, integrity, professionalism and respect for human rights while carrying out their lawful duties, noting that public confidence in the Police remains closely tied to the conduct of officers in the field.
He assured officers that the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force would continue to prioritise personnel welfare, regular training, operational efficiency and the provision of modern policing equipment to enhance service delivery.
While reiterating the Force’s commitment to building a professional and accountable police institution, the Inspector-General maintained that there would be zero tolerance for corruption, misconduct, abuse of office and every other form of unethical behaviour capable of eroding public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.
He emphasised that discipline, accountability and professionalism remain the bedrock of effective policing and sustainable public confidence.
The Inspector-General reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in strengthening the nation’s forensic capabilities and deepening strategic partnerships with relevant institutions, both locally and internationally, to ensure that policing in Nigeria keeps pace with emerging global standards and the evolving security needs of the nation.
The visit formed part of the Force leadership’s broader commitment to promoting innovation, institutional collaboration and scientific policing as essential pillars for improving crime prevention, criminal investigation and justice delivery in Nigeria.
