Lagos Achievers Lions Club Delivers Hope With Free Eye Care, Sanitation Drive In Obalende

Lagos Achievers Lions Club, District 404A3, Nigeria, has intensified efforts to tackle public health and environmental challenges in Obalende, Lagos, through a dual intervention that delivered free eye care services along with waste management support for residents.

The initiative, tagged “One Day – Two Projects”, combined a Vision Project offering free eye screening, consultations and prescription glasses with an Environmental Protection Project that saw the donation of waste bags and waste bins to strategic locations within the community.

Speaking during the exercise, Lioness Sylvia Effah, said the intervention was driven by the organisation’s commitment to environmental protection, one of the core missions of Lions International.

According to her, the decision to provide waste bins was informed by the need to encourage proper waste disposal habits and reduce indiscriminate dumping of refuse in public spaces.

She explained that the District Governor of District 404A3 had prioritised the provision of waste bins in identified locations as part of efforts to promote environmental responsibility and cleaner surroundings.

 Effah noted that poor sanitation remained a visible concern within the area, citing dirty surroundings and drainage channels that require greater attention.

She stressed that proper waste disposal would help reduce environmental degradation and minimise conditions that encourage the breeding of mosquitoes and other disease-carrying vectors.

While acknowledging that government agencies have a wider responsibility for infrastructure and drainage management, Effah maintained that community-based interventions remain essential in addressing immediate environmental concerns.

She also highlighted tree planting as another important aspect of environmental protection, recalling previous initiatives undertaken by the club to improve environmental aesthetics and sustainability.

However, she noted that the current focus was on sanitation awareness, environmental cleanliness and practical support through the donation of waste management materials.

Also speaking, Lion Moruf Jebe described the environmental project as a two-pronged intervention aimed at supporting community development while increasing awareness of the humanitarian activities of Lions Club.

He said the branded waste bags and bins would not only assist residents in proper waste disposal but also reinforce public awareness of environmental protection efforts.

Moruf Jebe explained that the environmental initiative formed part of Lions Club’s globally recognised annual programmes, which include medical outreach and environmental services among its core areas of intervention.
