A heartbreaking story has emerged from Venezuela after a mother sacrificed her life to save her young daughter during the devastating earthquakes that struck the country on June 24.
Andrea Bello, the wife of Venezuelan football star Héctor Bello of Marítimo de La Guaira, died while protecting the couple’s one-year-old daughter, Alana, as their apartment building collapsed during the powerful back-to-back earthquakes. The toddler survived the tragedy.
Paying tribute to his late wife on Instagram, Héctor described Andrea as their “favourite hero” and vowed to ensure their daughter would grow up knowing the sacrifice her mother made.
“You’ll always be our favourite hero, Mommy. I’m going to make sure our baby remembers how wonderful you were, how much you loved her,” he wrote.
“I’ll tell her the story of how you saved her, how you gave your own life for our daughter, how you were a brave woman who, even with your last breaths, never abandoned her.”
Venezuelan football media organisation Cumaná de Campeones also confirmed Andrea’s death, saying she was found beneath the rubble of the family’s collapsed home while Alana survived the disaster. The organisation extended its condolences to Héctor and expressed solidarity with the grieving family.
Venezuela was rocked by two powerful earthquakes measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, occurring less than a minute apart in what the U.S. Geological Survey described as a rare and severe seismic doublet. The disaster has caused widespread destruction across the country, with rescue operations continuing as authorities warn the death toll could rise further.
