Senegalese-American singer Akon has stated that musicians are not as wealthy as many people assume.
The singer claimed that despite the luxurious lifestyles and expensive items that many artists flaunt on social media and in music videos, a large number of them are not financially stable.
Speaking in an interview with Hip Hop Eye, Akon explained that while the music industry is very lucrative, it is business executives and those working behind the scenes who make the most money, not the performers.
“In the music industry, the artist is the last to get paid. He is the broke one, but he is the most famous. If you want to be broke and famous, be the artist.”
He advised those looking to build real wealth in entertainment to explore other professional sectors within the industry rather than focusing solely on singing.
“But if you want to make real money, go to other sectors of the music business, like the producer, songwriter, manager, agent and attorney. There are so many areas in the entertainment field that you can really maximise.”
