The Director-General of the National Boundary Commission (NBC), Mr Adamu Adaji, has received members of the committee set up to review Nigeria’s border management system.
The committee was established by the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa, to strengthen Nigeria’s border management architecture in line with prevailing security realities.
This is contained in a statement issued by Mrs Chinwe Udouwem, Head of Information, Press and Public Relations Unit of the commission and made available to newsmen on Thursday in Abuja.
Adaji commended the minister’s initiative aimed at enhancing national security through strategic border governance reforms.
According to him, effective border governance remains critical to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and promoting peaceful relations among neighbouring states.
He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to supporting the committee in the discharge of its mandate.
Adaji noted that emerging security challenges, including terrorism, arms trafficking, irregular migration, transnational crimes and climate-induced displacement, underscored the need for a robust border governance framework.
The NBC boss stressed the importance of a comprehensive and collaborative approach involving security agencies, border communities, sub-national governments, traditional institutions and regional partners.
He also highlighted the need for sustained investments in border infrastructure, technology, intelligence-sharing mechanisms and cross-border cooperation.
According to him, the Local Cross-Border Cooperation platforms established along Nigeria’s international borders have continued to foster trust, social cohesion and collective responses to shared challenges.
Speaking on behalf of the committee, its leader, Brig.-Gen. Muhammad Shehu, appreciated the director-general for the warm reception and solicited the commission’s support toward the successful execution of the committee’s assignment. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
