KANO — The academic achievements of the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, have been highlighted as a reflection of his longstanding commitment to education, scholarship and public service.
A profile published by The Parliamentarian Magazine, a publication of the media unit of the Deputy President of the Senate, that was made available to Daily Independent explained that Barau’s recent academic milestones underscore a legacy built on continuous learning and intellectual development alongside his political career.
According to the publication, Barau earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Corporate Entrepreneurship from Maryam Abacha American University in the Niger Republic in December 2025 after completing what it described as rigorous academic research and study.
It noted that the Deputy Senate President also received two honorary doctorate degrees within a little over two years in recognition of his contributions to education, national development and democratic governance.
The magazine recalled that Bayero University, Kano, conferred on Barau an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in March 2024, citing his contributions to education, youth development and nation-building.
It added that Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, honoured him with another honorary doctorate during its 15th Convocation Ceremony in January 2026 for his contributions to philanthropy, democratic governance and national development.
According to the publication, Barau also delivered the convocation lecture titled, “Managing Executive-Legislature Relations Towards Democratic Consolidation in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic,” where he shared insights drawn from his legislative experience.
The magazine said Barau’s academic pursuit reflects his belief that effective governance should be driven by knowledge, innovation and evidence-based policymaking.
It further stated that his scholarly background complements his responsibilities as Deputy President of the Senate and First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, where he oversees legislative deliberations and regional parliamentary engagements.
The publication also linked Barau’s interest in education to his legislative priorities, noting that he has consistently championed initiatives aimed at youth empowerment, educational development and economic growth.
According to the magazine, the combination of an earned doctoral degree and two honorary doctorates demonstrates that academic excellence and public service can reinforce one another.
It added that the recognitions are not merely ceremonial honours but carry an expectation that Barau will continue to deploy his knowledge and experience in advancing education, strengthening democratic institutions and improving the lives of Nigerians.
