The Nigerian Army has taken into custody a soldier following an accidental discharge that injured a fellow serviceman during a military operation in Borno State.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday at a military position identified as Sierra 7 in Damboa Local Government Area, a region that has remained a key hotspot in ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.
Military sources indicate that the soldier, attached to the 25 Brigade, allegedly discharged his weapon unintentionally while on duty, causing a gunshot injury to a colleague stationed at the same location.
The injured personnel was immediately attended to on-site with first aid before being evacuated to a nearby military medical facility for further treatment. His current condition has not been officially disclosed.
Following the incident, the soldier responsible for the discharge was promptly disarmed and placed under arrest by military authorities. He is currently being held pending the outcome of an internal investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting.
