The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared its support for the ongoing action by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), describing the strike as a necessary response to the persistent abduction of teachers and schoolchildren across the country.
In a statement the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, said the nationwide action reflected the determination of teachers to protect themselves rather than continue to operate under constant threats to their lives and safety.
Ajaero commended the leadership of the NUT, led by Comrade Titus Audu Amba, for what he described as a thoughtful and coordinated action aimed at drawing government attention to the worsening security situation in schools and communities.
The NLC expressed concern over the growing cases of abductions affecting teachers, students, local government workers, healthcare professionals and other vulnerable groups.
“Our hearts are with the teachers, pupils, students and other vulnerable workers who often fall victim to the activities of bandits and criminal elements,” Ajaero stated.
The labour centre said it was particularly disturbed by reports and images of abducted children allegedly being held in forests in Oyo State.
According to the NLC, insecurity has continued to spread across different parts of the country, with incidents recorded from Zamfara to Oyo and from Maiduguri to Port Harcourt.
The Congress warned that it would not hesitate to embark on solidarity actions with teachers and other categories of workers if governments at all levels failed to take decisive measures to address the security crisis.
Ajaero recalled that the NLC had previously organised security summits and protests to draw attention to the deteriorating security situation and had repeatedly urged authorities to adopt more proactive strategies.
The Congress called on governments at all levels to move beyond assurances and condolence messages by implementing concrete and measurable actions to secure lives and property.
It also demanded the immediate rescue of all abducted persons currently in captivity across the country.
