Kebbi state chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Barrister Aminu Hassan, has rejected allegations by members of the public seeking justice at various courts in Kebbi state and Nigeria that there is corruption in Nigeria’s judiciary.
Hassan, who spoke on the sidelines during the symbolic flag-off of equity bar law week in Birnin Kebbi said that people seeking justice, particularly those who want justice in their favour despite overwhelming evidence of wrongdoings and/or offences, make frantic efforts to buy judgment from judges, which has always been rejected by uncompromising justices and magistrates.
He warned justice seekers to refuse any judge who demands a bribe to compromise justice, saying the law is clear on giving and taking bribes from both parties.
We have always discouraged giving and taking bribes, and are people walking freely because courts exist; otherwise, there will be rancour everywhere. We also believe courts remain the last hope of the common man ”
On the delay in the administration of justice and delivery of judgments, which used to drag for many years,, he said judicial reforms in Kebbi state have reduced it to at least fifty percent as even high-profile cases are now decided in very little time.
While describing efforts by the Kebbi state government to digitise the judiciary as a welcome development, he urged lawyers and justices to use the opportunity to fast-track quick and impartial dispensation of justice, as he intends to catch up with global digital trends.
The bar chairman urged members of the bar to use the week to arm themselves with modern professional skills, even as he described the judiciary under Governor Idris as friendly to the noble profession.
Equity bar law week was attended by Governor Nasir Idris, the Attorney General of Kebbi state and top legal luminaries from far and near.
