Nollywood Stars, Abia Government Bid Farewell To Late Renowned Actor, Ekubo In Arochukwu

Scores of people among them Nollywood actors and actresses on Thursday bade farewell to the late renowned Nollywood actor and script writer, Dr Alex Ikenna Ekubo Okwaraeke as his remains were lowered to his eternal resting place at his family compound in Arochukwu.

Aged 40, Ekubo died on May 11, 2026 due to complications from advance metastatic kidney cancer. The funeral service conducted by the Streams of Joy International Ministries at the Mary Slessor Technical College ground, Arochukwu, his hometown, was also attended by other eminent personalities that included the Abia State governor, Dr Alex Otti represented by his Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba.

In her sermon at the solemn assembly, the wife of the founder of Streams of Joy International Ministries, Pastor (Mrs) Eno Jerry-Eze, reminded all that nothing happens without the knowledge and consent of God.

She challenged the living to constantly reexamine their lives, pointing out a day will come when everyone would give account of his stewardship on earth.

Mrs Jerry Eze described Ekubo as a talented young man, whose life was cut short by tragic circumstances, stressing that the family should always remember that the death of the saint is gain to heaven.

Speaking at the event, Governor Otti, has asked the family to take heart over the demise of their son and renowned Abia born Nollywood actor, Dr Alex Ikenna Ekubo Okwaraeke.

While describing the late actor as a profound loss to the state, nation, entertainment industry and millions of admirers across the world, Otti observed that the late actor was not only a celebrated entertainer, but also a cultural ambassador whose talent projected the image of the state and nation on the global stage.

According to him, the life of the deceased exemplified resilience, creativity and excellence and thanked God for using the deceased as an instrument of to bless the Ekubo’s root

“He carried out his acting duties with pride and demonstrated it through hard work and discipline which goes to say that one can achieve his dreams regardless of one’s background.

“His rise from Arochukwu to become a household name across Africa and beyond remains a powerful inspiration to young people”, the governor noted, urging Ekubo’s wife, his Ekubo-Okwaraeke family, the people of Arochukwu and the Nigerian creative industry to be strong, courageous and take solace in God.

The Abia chief executive therefore prayed for God’s strength and comfort for all who were affected by the loss of a son whose achievements brought honour and recognition to the state and nation.

In her tribute, the elder sister of the deceased, Mrs Kelechi Ekubo-Otusi, described her late immediate younger brother as a humble, caring, loving and God-fearing man who devoted his life to the service of God and humanity.

Also at the funeral service were the Leader of Abia State House of Assembly, Chief Uchenna Okoro Kalu, Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Chief Matthew Ekwuruibe, and other top government officials.
