The Northern Comrades Movement of Nigeria (NCMN) has called for urgent and decisive action to address worsening insecurity across Northern Nigeria and other parts of the country, warning that continued violence is affecting lives, livelihoods and economic activities. Speaking at a press conference in Kaduna on Monday, the group’s National Chairman, Mallam Jabir Ibrahim Yaro, described the current security situation as one of the most challenging periods in recent years.
According to Yaro, communities in several states, including Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Plateau, Borno and Yobe, have experienced attacks linked to banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and communal violence. He said the incidents have resulted in deaths, injuries and displacement of residents. The group expressed concern over attacks on security personnel and military formations, noting that such incidents have placed additional pressure on security operations.
NCMN also criticized recent remarks attributed to senior government officials regarding the security situation, arguing that public office holders must remain focused on their constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property.
While acknowledging ongoing efforts by security agencies, the group urged federal, state and local governments to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve border security, deploy modern surveillance technology and enhance support for security personnel. Other recommendations included expanding community-based intelligence networks, prosecuting individuals found to be financing criminal activities, and investing in youth employment and education to reduce vulnerability to crime.
“The time has come for decisive action,” Yaro said, urging authorities to implement practical measures to improve security and restore public confidence.The statement was copied to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Assembly leadership, security agencies, governors of the 19 Northern states, traditional rulers and civil society organisations.
