NUC Grants Margaret Lawrence University Approval To Offer Engineering, Management, Social Sciences Courses

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has given approval for Margaret Lawrence University to offer Engineering courses, including Management and Social Sciences.

The approval was contained in a circular titled, “Re: Resource Assessment Visit to Some Proposed Academic Programmes” dated May 12, 2026, and addressed to the Vice Chancellor of Margaret Lawrence University.

The institution said the programmes were endorsed by Abubakar Girei, Director of Academic Planning, on behalf of Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, Executive Secretary, NUC.

It noted that the latest approval will place the institution as a global citadel of learning, adding that full Engineering programmes has commenced in earnest at its Delta State main campus.

According to the Institution, degree programmes such as; B.Sc in Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business Administration, Mass Communication, International Relations, Public Administration, Sociology, Economics and Taxation are fully operational at the Abuja campus.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ernest Izevbigie, confirmed it in a statement on Wednesday, saying the approval was sequel to a resource verification visit carried out by it’s panel of experts to some proposed undergraduate academic programmes in Margaret Lawrence University, Galilee, Delta State, with a view to assessing the human and material resources available for their establishment.

“I am directed to inform the Vice-Chancellor that the Executive Secretary has considered and approved the establishment of the full-time mode of the following programmes to be run in the Main Campus of the University with effect from the 2026/2027 academic session” the NUC Executive Secretary stated.

The programmes approved for the Engineering courses are; B.Eng. Electrical and Electronics Engineering; B.Eng. Mechanical Engineering; B.Eng. Computer Engineering; and Civil Engineering.

The NUC added that the approval does not cover the part-time mode of delivery of the undergraduate programmes.

“Before the part-time mode of any undergraduate programme can commence, the Commission should be notified for further processing.

“The programmes shall bear only the approved title and nomenclature and any change will require the approval of the Commission” the NUC added.

The NUC further enjoined the University, to provide adequate human and material resources for the development and growth of the approved programmes.

Meanwhile, MLU has described the approval as another landmark milestone in its unflinching commitment towards providing technical education and national development.

It noted that the approval marks a defining era in MLU’s history and reaffirms the institution’s dedication to moulding world-class graduates groomed to be future leaders, who are expected to drive innovation and steer national growth.

With the approval, MLU said it is set to admit students into the newly established Faculty of Engineering in the 2026/2027 academic session.

“MLU is now poised to deliver quality engineering education that aligns with national and global standards.

“The university’s engineering courses will revolve round a modern, industry-designed curriculum developed in consultation with experts in the engineering profession;” the statement added.
