Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has approved the 7th Edition of the Delta State Strategic Communication Workshop (DELCOM) and the commencement of Phase 2 of the Drug Free Delta Campaign.
Director-General of the Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communications, Dr. (Barr.) Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, disclosed this on Monday during Orientation Panorama, a public affairs programme on Voice of Delta FM, Asaba.
Oghenesivbe said the annual workshop is designed to enhance the professional skills of political appointees, media aides and communication personnel in government, adding that this year’s edition will focus on reputation and crisis management, peace journalism, strategic media relations and public information management models.
He noted that participants would also examine the achievements of the Oborevwori administration over the past three years to deepen their understanding of government policies and programmes, while strengthening their capacity for effective message crafting and public engagement.
According to him, DELCOM has become a flagship capacity-building programme that continues to improve professionalism, strategic communication and media engagement within government.
He noted that Delta remains the only state in Nigeria sustaining an annual strategic communication workshop dedicated to sharpening the skills of communication and media personnel in the public sector.
The Bureau Chief further disclosed that Phase 2 of the Drug Free Delta Campaign will commence in July, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Delta State Command, as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking across the state.
He said the second phase would build on the gains of the campaign launched in 2024, which significantly boosted public awareness on the dangers of substance abuse, and strengthened collaboration among stakeholders in the fight against hard drugs.
Oghenesivbe commended the NDLEA, You Matter Charity Foundation (YMCF), the State Police Command, the State Drug Control Committee, Asaba Drug Rehabilitation Committee, and non-governmental organisations partnering with the state government, stressing that sustained awareness creation remains critical to protecting youths and communities from the devastating effects of drug abuse, including crime, addiction, mental health challenges and social dislocation.
He said while DELCOM continues to equip government communication personnel with the skills required to effectively engage the public and project government programmes, the Drug Free Delta campaign is aimed at reducing substance abuse through sustained sensitisation, prevention and stakeholder collaboration, thereby promoting safer and healthier communities across the state.
Oghenesivbe added that Governor Oborevwori’s approval of both initiatives reflects his administration’s unwavering commitment to strengthening governance communication and advancing the collective goal of making Delta State free from hard drugs through strategic partnerships, public enlightenment and stakeholder engagement.
