The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Delta South, Dr. Austin Orette, has called on the party’s leadership to release the results of its primary elections, describing transparency and accountability as essential principles of democracy. Orette made the remarks on Saturday in Owhelogbo, headquarters of Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, where he spoke on democratic values and political party administration.
He expressed concerns over the delay in announcing the outcome of the party’s primaries, arguing that political parties should operate through openness, accountability and trust. According to him, the party’s recent press briefing failed to address concerns raised by aspirants and members regarding the release of election results.
Orette questioned the requirement reportedly introduced by the party leadership for successful candidates to sign affidavits pledging loyalty to the party before results are announced. He argued that party procedures must align with constitutional provisions, including citizens’ rights to freedom of association. “The Constitution remains the supreme law, and political parties must operate within democratic principles,” Orette said.
He urged the NDC leadership to prioritise transparency, respect members’ concerns and publish the primary election outcomes. Orette maintained that political parties strengthen democracy when they build confidence among their members and the electorate through credible processes.
