Osun-Born Veteran Actor, Kola Oyewo Dies At 80

Renowned filmmaker, actor and retired Theatre Arts lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Alagba Kola Oyewo, is dead.

Oyewo died on Friday at the age of 80.

Announcing his passing on Instagram on Friday, actor Kunle Afod wrote: “Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow.

“His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

“Rest well, sir. Your work lives on.

“🕊️ It’s a wrap.”

The deceased celebrated his 80th birthday.in March, where President Bola Tinubu congratulated and described him as a national treasure and a worthy ambassador of Yoruba theatre and Nigerian storytelling.

The President noted that his contributions have significantly shaped the country’s cultural and creative landscape.

Highlighting Oyewo’s long-standing impact on theatre, film and academia, Tinubu said the veteran actor’s work has influenced generations of practitioners and scholars in the performing arts.

“Oyewo is a veteran thespian and a distinguished cultural icon whose enduring contributions to the growth of Nigeria’s theatre, film, and cultural productions have left an indelible mark on generations of artistes and scholars,” he said.
