The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as a work-free day to commemorate the new Islamic calendar year, Hijrah 1448AH.
Naijaonpoint reports that the announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade.
Oyelade said the government recognised the importance of Hijrah in the lives of Muslims.
The commissioner said Hijrah marks the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622AD and remains a significant event in Islamic history.
Oyelade said, “The Hijrah marks the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622AD, and is considered a significant event in Islamic history.
“As a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, we have declared tomorrow, Tuesday, 16th June, 2026, a work-free day in the state.”
Oyelade urged residents to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity and prosperity in Oyo State and Nigeria.
He also called on residents to reflect on the teachings of Hijrah and embrace solidarity and brotherhood.
According to Oyelade, “The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer, and community spirit. Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in our state and our nation.”
