Nigeria’s leading opposition the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the National Democratic Party (NDC) to challenge the Federal High Court order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the party.
The PDP said the legal option is important to defend Nigeria’s multiparty democracy and protect the rights of people who joined the NDC and contested elections on its platform.
The party made its position known in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong on Friday, 26 June.
Legal battle to influence political future
The PDP said it was still waiting for the Certified True Copy of the court judgement but expressed concern over the effect of the order on the country’s political system.
The party said many Nigerians spent their personal resources to contest elective offices under the NDC. It argued that the deregistration would affect those efforts and reduce political choices for voters.

“The leadership of the genuine Peoples Democratic Party urges the leadership of the NDC to vigorously challenge this order within the ambit of the law while seeking the support of the Nigerian people in the struggle for democratic consolidation,” the statement said.
The PDP also claimed that the development could weaken opposition politics before the 2027 general elections.
It alleged that the situation would favour the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which it accused of creating conditions that could limit political competition. The party did not provide evidence for the claim.
The statement described the court order as a setback for democracy and said it could discourage the growth of a healthy multiparty system in Nigeria.
The PDP also called on the Federal Government to take steps to lower political tension in the country. It said this would help promote peace, political stability and protect democratic values as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
The court judgement has drawn attention because political parties play a major role in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Any decision affecting the registration or existence of a political party could have an impact on political participation and electoral competition.
