Reps Announces New Committee Chairpersons After Leadership Changes

The House of Representatives has announced a fresh reshuffle of its committee leadership following recent changes within the minority caucus of the Green Chamber.

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen disclosed the development during an emergency plenary session on Monday.

He explained that the adjustments became necessary after several lawmakers were elevated to new positions within the minority leadership structure, creating vacancies in key standing committees.

As part of the changes, Aliyu Madaki has been named the new Chairman of the House Committee on Special Duties. He takes over from Fred Agbedi, who recently emerged as the Minority Leader of the House.

The House also approved the appointment of Ali Isa as Chairman of the Committee on Shippers Council. Isa, who previously served as Minority Whip, replaces Abdulsamad Dasuki following his emergence as Deputy Minority Leader.

In another adjustment, Pascal Agbodike has been appointed Chairman of the House Committee on Small and Medium Enterprises. He succeeds Mansur Soro, who was recently elevated to the position of Minority Whip.

The leadership changes extended to the Committee on Hydrological Services, where Kelechi Nwogu was named the new chairman. Nwogu takes over from Agbodike, who moved to head the Committee on Small and Medium Enterprises.

The latest restructuring is expected to ensure continuity in the operations of the affected committees while aligning committee leadership with the new minority caucus arrangement in the House.

Meanwhile, political developments on the floor of the chamber took another turn as a member representing Funtua/Dandume Federal Constituency of Katsina State, Abubakar Mohammed, formally defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The lawmaker’s defection letter was read during plenary. In the correspondence, Mohammed stated that his decision became effective on May 8 and was based on his belief that he would be better positioned to serve and protect the interests of his constituents under the platform of the PDP.
