Retired General’s Death in Captivity: Tinubu Vows No Negotiation with Terrorists as Security Concerns Deepen

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sadness over the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar in the custody of terrorists in Katsina State, declaring that his administration would never negotiate with criminal groups for the release of captives.
The death of the retired senior military officer has once again brought to the fore persistent concerns over insecurity in parts of the country, particularly the growing menace of banditry and kidnapping that continues to claim lives across the North-West.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu described the death of the former military officer as shocking and extended condolences to his family, the Katsina State Government, and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
General Abubakar, who had retired after a distinguished military career, was reportedly travelling to his hometown when he was abducted by terrorists. His wife remains in captivity.
The President particularly sympathised with the deceased’s family, especially his wife, who is still being held against her will by the captors.
While expressing grief over the tragic development, Tinubu maintained a hardline stance against negotiations with terrorists, insisting that the government would not bow to pressure to release detained terror suspects in exchange for hostages.
According to Onanuga, the President stated that although the terrorists had “done their worst,” the government would remain resolute in its fight against terrorism.
Reiterating his June 12 Democracy Day message, Tinubu said:”Bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State. These windows of surrender will not remain open forever. And no mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians.”
The President added:”As Nigerians, we must stand united and be assured that the enemies of our nation shall soon be history. We will triumph over terror and continue to build a more prosperous nation.”
Describing the late general’s death as a turning point in the war against terrorism, Tinubu further declared:”General Abubakar’s death should further serve as a defining moment in our battle against terrorists and insurgents, never to negotiate with them on any terms, but to continue to treat them as the greatest enemies of our dear nation, who should never be spared.”
The death of a retired Major-General in captivity has, however, renewed debate over the effectiveness of current security strategies and the continuing vulnerability of citizens, including former senior military officers, to criminal attacks.
Security analysts have repeatedly warned that the persistence of kidnapping and terrorist activities in several parts of the country underscores the need for stronger intelligence gathering, enhanced community policing, and sustained military operations against armed groups.
The incident also highlights the human cost of insecurity, as families continue to bear the burden of abductions while many victims remain in captivity across the country.
