Sanwo-Olu Renews War On Youth Substance Abuse As Caleb University VC Re-Enacts Mount Zion Movie Prowess

 LAGOS – As the threat of substance abuse continues to endanger the future of many young Nigerians, stakeholders are increasingly exploring innovative ways to drive home the message of prevention and rehabilitation.

In Lagos, the campaign against drug abuse received a fresh boost as Dr. (Mrs) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, wife of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in partnership with the university, renewed her advocacy and commitment to safeguarding the nation’s youth from the devastating consequences of illicit drug use and addiction.

A recent Awareness Campaign and Walk Against Drug Abuse was organised by her office at Caleb University. Imota, Lagos State, was the third tertiary institution visited under the initiative to mark the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

However, anti-drug advocacy took an unusual but compelling turn when the Vice-Chancellor of Caleb University, Professor Olalekan Asikhia, stepped into the spotlight by re-enacting his dramatic prowess and roles from popular Mount Zion movies to illustrate the dangers of substance abuse.

The dramatic presentation, which blended entertainment with social messaging, underscored the growing recognition that, beyond policies and enforcement, storytelling, education and community engagement remain powerful tools in shaping positive values and steering young people away from destructive habits.

Prof Asikhia, in his welcome note, said the theme for the WADA 2-26, “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” could not be more apt, regretting that despite decades of awareness campaigns and policy interventions, the menace of substance abuse continues to evolve.

He expressed gratitude to the Office of Dr Sanwo-Olu for partnering with the institution to host the vital programme, saying her presence underscores a shared commitment that transcends political, social, and academic boundaries and called for an urgent need to confront the scourge of drug abuse that threatens the very fabric of our society.

“As a university, we recognise our unique role not only as a centre for academic excellence but also as a moral compass and a community of change agents. Caleb University stands firm in its resolve to foster a drug-free environment, promote mental wellness, and equip our students with the resilience and knowledge to reject the temptations of illicit substances.

“Today’s programme has been carefully designed to be both enlightening and engaging. We will witness a rally of solidarity, insightful talks from experts, and theatrical presentations that dramatise the harsh realities and hopeful possibilities of a life free from drugs.

“Let us use this platform to speak truth, break stigma, and forge partnerships that yield tangible results,” he added.

Recounting the 2025 campaign at the Lagos State University (LASU), Dr Sanwo-Olu said over 3,000 participants joined our LASU advocacy campaign with an anti-drug signpost and mural, saying “The inclusion of Caleb University in the initiative marked a significant milestone in Lagos State’s anti-drug campaign.”

She noted that the institution is the first private university in the state to join the programme aimed at raising awareness and preventing substance abuse among youths.

Reflecting on the global theme, she said, “Drug abuse threatens our youth and society at large. It damages mental and physical health, academic performance, productivity, relationships, and well-being. Addiction cuts across age, gender, and social status, yet victims are often stigmatised instead of supported.

“We must embrace compassion, encourage rehabilitation, and create opportunities for recovery. As First Lady, I remain committed to this fight. Through my office, we have partnered with NDLEA, Ministries of Education, Health, Justice, Youth & Social Development, NGOs, community leaders, market associations, and LGAS to strengthen awareness.

“To students: Your choices today shape your tomorrow. Drug abuse may bring temporary excitement,t but destroys dreams, health, education, career, and life. I urge you to become campaign ambassadors, discourage substance abuse, support those struggling, and join the Caleb University WADA Group to promote a drug-free campus.”

She lauded the management of the university and the Students’ Union for partnering in this cause, as anti-drug signage is erected on the campus. 

“Let us be vigilant. If you see something, say something. Early intervention saves lives. The Lagos State Government under Mr Governor, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, remains committed through the Inter- Ministerial Drug Abuse Control Committee and relevant agencies to scale up prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and public education,” she added.

In her goodwill messages, the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs Oluremi Hamzat, enjoined students to build and embrace positive values and reject every form of drug or substance abuse.
