Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have dismantled an Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) roadblock in Borno state and rescued 53 civilians held by the insurgents.
In a statement on Thursday, Captain Mohammed Goni, acting military information officer of Operation Hadin Kai, said the operation was carried out by troops of the 135 Special Forces Battalion in sector 2.
Goni said the troops also recovered eight vehicles seized by the insurgents during the operation along the Buratai-Kamuya road in Biu LGA of the state.
According to the Military, troops deployed at Dutse Kura detected the roadblock through surveillance cameras before a quick reaction force was dispatched to the area.
The statement said the troops pursued the insurgents towards the Mangari-Dora area and engaged them in a firefight, while the insurgents withdrew after coming under heavy gunfire.
The Army said the troops rescued 53 civilians and recovered eight vehicles allegedly seized by the insurgents. It added that the troops cleared the insurgents’ withdrawal route and searched the area but made no further contact with the fleeing fighters.
The Military said the rescued civilians, recovered vehicles and other property were evacuated to Buratai town. It added that the rescued civilians are undergoing documentation and medical evaluation.
The theatre command commended the troops for what it described as their professionalism and swift response.
The Military also urged residents of communities within the theatre of operations to remain vigilant and provide timely information on suspicious movements.
It said troops have continued to maintain an aggressive operational posture across the area and that the security situation remains calm.
