Sowore collapses after police tear-gas democracy day protesters in Abuja (VIDEO)

Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and former presidential candidate was reportedly hospitalised on Friday after collapsing during a Democracy Day protest at Unity Fountain in Abuja.

The protest, attended by scores of activists and civil society groups, was organised to draw attention to worsening insecurity, economic hardship and governance challenges across the country.

Trouble began when security operatives moved to disperse the demonstrators.

Witnesses said police deployed tear gas canisters at the protest ground, causing panic as participants fled the scene.

Amid the confusion, Sowore was reportedly affected by the tear gas and lost consciousness.

Supporters and fellow protesters immediately rushed to his aid and evacuated him from the venue.

Sources close to the activist disclosed that he regained consciousness while being transported from the protest ground.

He was later taken to an undisclosed hospital for further medical examination and treatment.

The development heightened tensions at the Democracy Day demonstration, with protesters condemning the disruption of what they described as a peaceful gathering.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the police nor relevant authorities had issued an official statement regarding the incident.
