A Ghanaian woman living in the United Kingdom has sparked widespread debate on social media after sharing footage of severe flooding in a British town, using the moment to draw a pointed comparison between how residents in the UK and Ghana respond to flood disasters.

In the video, the woman noted that despite the significant flooding visible on the streets with brown water submerging an entire residential and commercial road, local British residents were not publicly blaming their government for the situation, in contrast to what she suggested would happen in Ghana under similar circumstances.

“If this were Ghana, many people would be blaming the government, but here, people are not complaining,” she observed.

The footage, which shows a flooded English street flanked by red brick terraced houses and partially submerged vehicles, has since drawn significant engagement from Ghanaian social media users, many of whom have pushed back on the comparison.

Critics of the woman’s position have noted that the two situations are not directly comparable, arguing that Ghana’s flooding crisis is significantly worsened by man-made factors including inadequate drainage infrastructure, poor sanitation enforcement, and government inaction making public criticism of authorities more justifiable than in the UK, where flooding is more often attributable to natural weather events.
